The endless white

Adventures, Photography

Sometimes you find a place that manages to reach your soul. You walk into the wild, the open space, and slip inside a world where you become yourself. We live our lives in a hectic society. We all need to escape from time to time. I found my place in the north. The arctic cold and the endless white. The aurora nights and a million stars.

My latest journey to Abisko was even better than expected. We had 3 days of amazing weather and the scenery was breathtaking. The aurora showed itself and nights were dark and cold with millions of stars.

The temperature dropped to -30 degrees in the morning. I never experienced such cold. It was amazing to feel the cold air entering my lungs. It made me feel so alive and full of energy.

The sun was out and the sky was blue. With snowshoes we hiked the whole day exploring the mountains and the Kungsleden trail to Alesjaure. The snow was fresh and deep and we didn’t meet a single soul on the trail. The mountains were ours.

When you are that far north at the end of february the sunsets and the sunrises seems to last forever. The sun creeps over the sky and the light becomes soft and golden.

A beautiful cabin was our home for 2 nights. It was so nice to live without electricity. All we needed was firewood, candles and good company. After spending time in the sauna and the traditional naked run in the freezing cold and rolling around in the snow it was time for chasing the aurora borealis. The feeling of standing all alone on a ice cold evening staring into the sky in total silence is indescribable. I could hear my heart beat and feel the blood running through my veins. The ice makes a rumbling noise when it grows and you can feel it gently move. Scary and exciting at the same time!

On the last day before heading back to Kiruna we did a short hike on Tornetrask Lake. The sun was shining and it made the ice look dark blue. It really felt like being in the arctic that day. The lake is frozen for 6 – 8 months of the year and there is snow for at least 8 months straight.

In september I will head north again to explore Sarek National Park and get off the beaten path for a while!
